Nox Intempesta are probably unknown for most of our readers. But this Black Metal band from Berlin are one of the handfull BM band I really like. They are very much an underrated band. The reason is probably their brutal and compact sound which I guess must be a slap in the face of those who are who are into family- friendly Black Metal. Nox Intempesta do not fit this bill. Instead; they have on their three releases brought new a meaning to Dante's Inferno. We contacted the band for an update and to show our support.
All questions answered by - Mor D. Ra "Coldstone" von Kaldesstein - for "The hermetic Brotherhood by the Essence of Creation"
1. When and where was Nox Intempesta started ? What do the name means ?
Why did you choose that name ?
NOX INTEMPESTA started at the beginning of 1994 with Tyrann on drums and vocals and me, Coldstone,
on guitars and bass. Tyrann, originally a guitarist, learned drums besides his main instrument and that was
really an advantage, because we didn`t found any other band members at that time. Tyrann and I are deeply
rooted into fanaticism when it comes to our music, so the search for equivalent band members was nearly
impossible, a problem which does not exist anymore. Our name means something like "The darkest night, as
black as ravens" and it is Latin. We choosed that name because it totally fits to our music, we wanted a
name which stands mightful as a monument for our apocalyptic Black/Death Metal Adoration!!!
2. How did you get in touch with Folter Records ?
We met Jörg from Folter Rec. on a lot of concerts here in Berlin, where he sold some CD`s and stuff like that, and he was interested in us and our music, so we got the deal in early 1997.
3. You released two MCDs before you released your new CD. Please tell us more about the "Die Lieder Von Tod Und Ewigkeit" MCD.......
"Die Lieder von Tod und Ewigkeit" was recorded at Octosound Studio here in Berlin with the same line-up I mentioned in the first question. It contained only old songs out of our two demos "A grim red kiss of Transylvania" and "Majestic Scarlet Nova". Although it was only one day on which we had to record the MCD, it was a really weird session with a strange mood in the studio, what anybody can obviously hear on the album.
4. ....and the "De Vermis Mysteries" MCD.
"De Vermis Mysteriis" was also recorded at the Octosound but this time as a quartet. We met our drummer Holocaust two months before the studio date and our bassist Monastiir right before. Originally it was a recording just for ourselves, to hear the new material for "Damnanus Dominum", but we all liked it so much, that we and Folter Rec. decided to bring it out for the live shows we played with MAYHEM. By the way, it was limited to 333 copies, as well as our first MCD, which was limited to 1000 copies. Well, you see we are a very limited band.....ha, ha !
5. Please give us a full insight to your debut album "Damnaus Dominium". The recording, the tracks, the concept, the line up on the album and the art- work.
Well, let me start with our current line-up:
Tyrann
Vocabular Armageddon & hellharmonic 6-string Abominations
Coldstone
Infernal 6-string whoremongery & philosophical master in thy Pandaemoniums Palace
Monastiir
5-stringed Basstard and other conspiracies concerning the hellish empires
Holocaust
Abyssic Artillery Assault against the heavenly chambers
"Damnanus Dominum" was recorded, mixed and pre-mastered by the legend Harris Johns at his new Spiderhouse Studio. The recording went very well, the studio was really the best choice for us. The cover & layoutconcept was created by the band and Mikis, the promoter of Folter Rec.. The cover shows a picture of a burning cathedral here in Germany, and we used an excerpt where only the cross is to see with the nazarene still hang on covered in flames. The inside booklet shows to every lyric a different drawing by the great master Gustav Dore´ . All in all, it was a lot of work we spend with the layout but this is something, which is totally necessary to get a good end product. Well, what is to say about the concept: "Damnanus Dominum" surely deals with the Occult, mixed with my own philosophy and belief. I`m defininitely into that stuff since I`m 12, so the album is about the true meaning of the Occult: The tenets of opposites! The lyrics are in German and in English, something, that will change with the next CD, where all lyrics will be in your mothertongue. Also the concept will be something different, it will deal with the history of the fallen angels, their empire and the war against the legions of God. It will be 60% based on the written story as within "The Bible" and "The Apocryphs" and the rest percents will be fiction, compared with a science-fictional story. But it will be still very brutal, cold and dark, because some of the lyrics are ready now and they seem to be very unique within our style. We have also four new songs now, which are even more brutal than on "Damnanus Dominum". Our second full lenght assault will be titled "Aggestum Armageddon", so be prepared for the ultimate high end aggression! To end this question with the titles on "Damnanus Dominum", here they are: 1. "Die erhabene Dreifaltigkeit des Leidens", 2. "O Herrlichkeit, Du Glanz des Totenthrones", 3. "In clairvoyant flesh", 4. "Coldstone Sacrificial...", 5. "Damnanus Dominum", 6. "Krone meiner Todessalbung", 7. "De Vermis Mysteriis", 8. "Abomination Jugglery", 9. "Impressionen eines Sterbenden", 10. "Speculum Spagyria Satana".
6. How would you describe your music ?
PURE APOCALYPTIC BLACK/DEATH METAL ADORATION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7. How was it to work with the Thrash Metal icon Harris Johns ?
The work was really great and based on Harris Johns talented hand for a good and brutal sound. It surely was a fucking classic to work with him and hopefully, we will do it again in the future. Johns was very expierienced within his stuff, and on the other hand he worked really careful, nearly exhaustive to get what we wanted. The only shit was, that I got a bad cold during our recordings so I did my guitar takes with fever, but as I said, it was great!
8. Your fellow countryman Richard Wagner Sr. did a sort of Black Metal 100 years ago. The German litterature and folklore are also very much based on death, disaster and the occult. How much has the Richard Wagner and the German litterature/folklore influenced your material ?
Well, a great question and the answer is really difficult. At first, I have to mention, that I don`t like Richard Wagner so much as others within the Black Metal scene, I`m more into the marvellous works of the master of masters Johann Sebastian Bach, but it is true what you mentioned about the German literature and folklore. I think that my german poems are more influenced by the darker works of Goethe, this faustian spirit within our culture, but my own creation of the Occult is, on the other hand, too far away from the works out of our country. So all in all, our material is more based on this spiritual thing, I don`t want that our work has anything to do with eartly boundaries. But to end this question, everybody is surely influenced by the culture out of his own country, so perhaps we are influenced by the things you mentioned in another way, in our behaviour, for example. It would be very interesting to hear some sentences about this topic from persons, which we know very well, I will expierience this in the future.
9. Regarding this Scandinavian Black Metal thing. How is it to release CDs on a world wide market who are so dominated by family- friendly Black Metal from Scandinavia ?
Hail to thee, you`re one of the few who realised that. It is surely a pity, that these bands, who play those sweet melody Metal (I even hesitated now to call it Black or Death Metal) are so dominant on the market! So the question is answered in a few seconds: It is really hard to sell our style and to get good critics when every months tons of shitty, uninteresting and ridiculous Black Metal bands bring out their newest shit piece of their so called "art"!!!
10. Scandinavian Black Metal bands like Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir, Ulver and Dissection are all signed on the two leading German labels Nuclear Blast and Century Media. I might be wrong, but I cannot find any German Black Metal bands on neither of these two market dominating labels. What the fuck is going on in Germany ? Are there any political or commercial reasons behind this ?
In my opinion, there`re more commercial reasons behind it, but again you`re totally right concerning this point. It also seems to be totally ridiculous that no german persons or bands try to consider this situation with your eyes. For the most, this situation is natural, I really can`t believe it. Germany is the biggest Metal market in the world (except Japan), but the fans in my country only look at Scandinavia (you know:"only northern people can play Black Metal"!?!) and buy everything out of Norway, Sweden and Finland. So you see, for me, the question is left: What the fuck is going on in Germany??? But to end this question I can promise you: With our next CD we will piss on these arrogant motherfuckers, "Aggestum Armageddon" will crush everything !!!!!!
11. How is the Black Metal scene in Germany ?
Really difficult to say, because we`re not in contact with any other bands. Concerning the gigs I must say, that some clubs asked recently if we could play there. So there`s not really a lack of gigs, but a lack of persons who will go to the shows. Most of the fans nowadays only try to look as evil as the devil himself and stand as still as sculptures on concerts, that`s surely frustrating for the live act. But our Black Metal scene is not the best, a lot of primitive bands with primitive views.....!
12. I know this is a very sensitive area so I will enter this minefield as carefully as I can:
Adorned Brood had a we-are-no-nazis message on the CD they released on Folter Records. I can understand why Adorned Brood with their image wanted to make this statement. Traditionally; Black Metal are associated with right wing extremists. Especially in Scandinavia through bands like Burzum. Is this association a problem for a German Black Metal band like Nox Intempesta ?
What is your political, religious and philosophical views ? Is this generally a problem for German Black Metal bands ?
First I want to say, that I really hate this association you`re talking about. Black/Death Metal has nothing to do with any kind of political views, these shit belongs to Oi and Punk bands. I don`t care about those right wing bands, but they have to enter another scene in my opinion! I hope, that this will not be a problem for us in the future, because a lot of bands have those political views and this surely will be transferred to any other band by the masses. But who cares about the masses? We won`t be a Black/Death Metal band if we cared about the masses, but to come back to these politic/propaganda shit: On the other hand I hate those "Anti-Nazi messages", that also belongs to the left wing propaganda and is totally useless in our music. At the end I want to say that I don`t want to reveal my own philosophic or religious views, because they`re totally personal and belongs to "The hermetic Brotherhood by the Essence of Creation"!
13. Do anyone in Nox Intempesta do other bands/project ?
No! NOX INTEMPESTA must be work enough, no fucking projects !!!
14. What are your plans for the coming months and year ? Any tour plans ?
Right now, we`re preparing for some live gigs here in Germany and one in Switzerland in November and rehearse intensively for our next output. We`re also searching for new label interests, so hopefully we will get a contract in the future to release "Aggestum Armageddon". Our tour with KRISIUN (one of the best bands, by the way) was cancelled, so we have to look for other chances. Perhaps a tour in Scotland ?
15. Do you have a merchandise list ? From what address can the band be contacted ?
No merchandise list, sorry, I also want to have some band shirts but the lack of money, you know.... Those who wants to contact us, please write to:

16. Finally; we have heard a lot of very positive things about Berlin after the fall of The Berlin Wall.
Please describe Berlin to us.
O man, Berlin is a really old city with great old buildings and monumental places and I`m very lucky to live here, because a lot of classical culture fascinates me most. But I can`t describe it so well, you have to look for yourself.
At the end, I want to thank you for surely the greatest interview I`ve done until now, you rule!!!!! Also thanks to all who bought our CD`s, you make us keeping on with our apocalyptic spirit within our art, hail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was a pleasure to interview a an ultra- brutal Black Metal band. Which is a rarity in the scene. Black Metal should be evil, twisted, ultra- brutal and anti-social. Not family- friendly and commercial.
Nox Intempesta are now looking for new label for their upcoming album. We hope Nox Intempesta get the record deal they truly deserve.
