Morbid Death are not exactly located in the center of Europe. Their address is The Azores Islands and it is situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This is a very small society and it is a minor miracle that it has produced such a good Doom Metal band as Morbid Death. Their debut album "Echoes Of Solitude" are a solid dosage of Doom Metal. We contacted the band for an update.



1. When and where was Morbid Death started ?? Could you give us a brief biography ??

- MORBID DEATH started in the year of 1990 at St. Michael's Island on the archipelago of Azores. We already released two Demo-Tapes. On the last year we released our 1st debut album "Echoes of Solitude". We choosed "Gods of Eternity" for our Video-Clip from "Echoes of Solitude".

2. Your choice of band name seems a bit strange to be a Goth/Doom Metal band. Could you please tell us more about your choice of band name ?

- At the beginning we started playing Thrash/Death Metal and we wanted a name with a strong meaning. There is also another reason for that; we were the 1st band in Azores that played that music style.

3. Have you released any releases before your debut album ?

- Yes, two Demo-Tapes "Nomad" in 1993 and "Shameless Faith" in 1995 - live tracks.

4. Please tell us more about the "Echoes Of Solitude" opus ? For example the recording, the lyrics, the writing process and the featured tracks.

- 4. We recorded "Echoes of Solitude" at MM Music Studios (St. Michael's Island) and it was produced by Eduardo Botelho. It's a nine track album and we invited 5 artists:

Susana Santos - vocals at "Ones Will"
Luis Franco - vocals at "Depressed Mind"
Carlos Massa - bass guitar at "Devastação"
Pedro Rodrigues - keyboards at "Gods of Eternity"
We invited these people, because we wanted this album to be not only ours.

5. Which bands or piece of art/literature has inspired "Echoes of Solitude" and/or Morbid Death ?

- Paradise Lost. We like their music and also their lyrics.

6. Independent Records is a quite big record label in the metal scene in Portugal. Could you give us a brief presentation of the label and the importance of this label ?

- Independent Records, is a new independent label. Now, all metal bands are releases by GRADE that is the sub-label of Independent Records to care about all metal releases.

7. What is your view on the metal scene in Portugal ?

- In Portugal, there is a quite number of good bands, radio shows, fanzines, news-letters, labels, etc. Well, it's progressing...

8. We had to mention Moonspell sometime during this interview. How much has this band's success influenced Morbid Death ? How much has this band influenced the rest of the scene in Portugal ?

- Moonspell. Uah!!!! What a great band. We (Morbid Death), had the opportunity, here at St. Michael's Island, to give a concert with them. We opened already a Moonspell concert. It was an honour for us. We already played with Heavenwood. It was an honour too, for us. Like you see, we already played with the two most popular bands of Portugal.

9. Which bands would you compare yourself with ??

- We really don't know.

10. What are your plans for the coming months and year ?? Any tour plans ??

- We are now recording our 2nd album. We choose MM Music Studios, once more and Eduardo Botelho is the producer of the album. We don't have yet a name for it and probably it will be release at beginning of 1999.

- We had already "Echoes of Solitude" T-Shirts but it's sold out. We had too, stickers and a4 info-sheets.
