Death Metal from Spain normally comes with a large "not for the faint hearted" health warning. In other words; ultra-brutality is the norm. But Deathless has adopted a slightly different approach. Their brand of Death Metal is in the melodic Swedish Death Metal vein. Deathless and their debut album has got a lot of praise around this doomed planet. We caught up with them for an update.
1.When and where was Deathless spawned ? By whom ?? Please give us a full biography.
We were playing under the monicker of Line Of Fire when in 1995 we decided to give a new air to the songs and change the band´s name. It was the same line-up than now. We recorded eight songs but we only released two of them as a promo tape. In 1997 we sign with a deal Pulverised records and the same year we recorded The time to be immortal at Sunlight studios with Tomas Skogsberg. We had problems with the label and they gave us a chance to exit from Pulverised, so we took it. That year, 1999, we got in touch with Goldtrack records and in a few months, we sign a new deal with them. The album was released in the beginning of 2000.
2. Please tell us more about the chosen band-name. What does it stand for ?
We found it written in an old English dictionary when we were recording the eight songs in 1995 in a local studio. When you do a recording, your music never dies. Your music is there through the years...
3. You have had numerous problems with the release of your debut album. Please tell us more about these problems.
As a say above, we sign with Pulverised records in 1997 and we did the recording during octuber of the same year. After a lot of delay in the release of the cd, the label talked to us about this problem. The end of the story is mentioned on the first question...
4. When and how did you get in touch with Goldtrack Records ? How has the co-operation been so far ?
We got in touch in 1999, when we were free from Pulverised and we were looking for a label interested in "The time to be immortal". We signed for two cd´s, "The time to be immortal" and a new one. We are really happy with the work they´re doing with us.
5. Goldtrack Records is more known as a Heavy Metal label than a Death Metal label. Any problems for Deathless in this respect ??
Well, maybe Goldtrack is more oriented to Heavy Metal than Death Metal or so, but this isn´t a problem for us in any way. As I said before, we´re happy with Goldtrack.
6. Would you call Deathless a Death Metal band or would you use another term ?
I really don´t care!!! The only sure thing is that we play metal. I´ve read a lot of terms describing our music! Nowadays, maybe we play Melodic Death Metal...
7. Please give us a presentation of "The Time To Be Immortal" album. The recording, lyrics, the concept…..the full story !!!!
"The time to be immortal" is Deathless debut album, recorded at Sunlight studios, Stockholm, in october´97. Initially had to be released through Pulverised records during 1998 but finally it was done by Goldtrack records during 2000. It´s not a conceptual album, each lyric takes a different way.
8. You recorded the album with Tomas Skogsberg as the producer. Which probably explain the Swedish sound on the album. Why did you go for Tomas Skogsberg and the Swedish sound ?
Sunlight studio was the first option we had. We thought that it was a great studio so we did the recording there.
9. How was this experience ?
It was a cool experience, although Sweden is an expensive country for us...
10. After the release of "The Time To Be Immortal", what has your band done ?
We´ve been writing more new songs and playing some live shows in Spain.
11. For a person like myself who live on the fringes of Europe (Scotland); Spanish Death Metal = Repulse Records. They seems to have quite a dominating role in the Spanish Death Metal scene. Or am I wrong ?
No, you´re not wrong. Repulse records is one of the most important Death metal labels in the world, but their bands are more brutal oriented than Deathless.
12. What is your plans for the rest of this year and next year ?
We have to play some shows during the rest of the year and we would like to finish some songs that are still incomplete.
13. Where can Deathless be reached ? Any mail order list ?
Yes! You can reach our cd just here: Goldtrack records, P.O.Box 37062, 28080 - Madrid, Spain.
14. Is there anything you want to add to this interview ?
Yes, thanks to you, for the interview and a big hello to all of your readers!!! See you !!!
